Tips On 3 Bad Puppy Habits And How You Can Counter Them
61
When you bring home a puppy, it is very natural that everyone will pamper him in the beginning. You will laugh at his antics and misbehaviors and think that he will soon outgrow it. But unfortunately, if a puppy starts developing a bad habit, getting him out of it, is not such an easy job. Here is a short summary of 3 such common bad habits that a puppy often displays and how you can overcome them.
1. Chewing
A puppy will have a natural tendency to chew as he is teething. But it can turn into a bad habit if not corrected in the initial period. Chewing everything is not only destructive for your home, but also dangerous for his health. So if your puppy is chewing something undesirable, stop him the very fast time. Take it from him and give him his chew toy instead. Say a firm “NO” and keep an eye on him. Do this every time, without fail, and soon your puppy will stop chewing things that are forbidden to him.
2. Begging for food
This is another bad habit that grows due to our pampering. When your pet is a puppy, never ever feed him from table or offer what you are having as treats. Ignore him when he is begging and if that does not work, put him in another room while you are eating. This is one habit that you have to break with the help of other members of your house. Tell everyone, especially children, not to give the puppy any food that they are having. If you are strict from the beginning, this habit will not develop at the first place. If it is already there, being firm is the only way to deal with it.
3. Barking
Dogs or puppies will bark for many reasons. He may bark to get your attention or to show irritation. Most of all, he will bark at people who are strangers to him. If you don’t teach him from the start on when to stop, his barking is going to become a problem later on. One way to counter it is clapping your hands to draw his attention and then saying a loud “NO”.
